The Power of God in the Bible

How can a little finite mortal describe the power of our Creator or the ability of our infinite God in all things? It is impossible to do it adequately, for God is so powerful and great and vast that our little minds at best cannot take it all in.

But God has revealed Himself in His Book, the Bible, adequately enough to give us a vast unfolding idea of His power to do ANYTHING thought by man to be impossible! He created our world and hung it out in space, and it has been hanging there for thousands of years on nothing but His sustaining power. He has been replenishing our earth’s needs in spite of the destructive powers of both Satan and man.

Let us now take some glimpses into God’s Word concerning His revelation of His absolutely unlimited power. —Watson Goodman

GOD’S POWER TO CREATE — 1

He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens at His discretion. —Jeremiah 10:12

To whom then will you liken God?... It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.  To whom then will you liken Me, or to whom shall I be equal?" says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things, who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; not one is missing. —Isaiah 40:18a, 22,25,26

"Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You." —Jeremiah 32:17

God...has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds. —Hebrews 1:1a, 2

GOD CREATES AND GIVES LIGHT; SATAN DESTROYS  — 2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. "The thief  [Satan] does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy." —John 1:1 and 3; 10:10a

And He said to them,"I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." —Luke 10:18

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. —1 Peter 5:8

"Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising." —Acts 17:29

I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. —1 Corinthians 10:20b

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." —John 8:12

"I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." —John 10:10b

GOD’S POWER HAS NO BOUNDARY — 3

God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God. —Psalm 62:11

But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases. —Psalm 115:3

"Indeed before the day was, I am He; and there is no one who can deliver out of My hand." —Isaiah 43:13a

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all."—1 Chronicles 29:11, 12

"O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?" —Deuteronomy 3:24

"For with God nothing will be impossible." —Luke 1:37

You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. —Psalm 77:14

THE GREATNESS OF GOD’S INFINITE POWER — 4

"Your right hand, O LORD, has become glorious in power; Your right hand, O LORD, has dashed the enemy in pieces. And in the greatness of Your excellence You have overthrown those who rose against You; You sent forth Your wrath which consumed them like stubble." —Exodus 15:6-7

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. —Psalm 147:5

Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake, that He might make His mighty power known. —Psalm 106:8

You alone are the LORD; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.—Nehemiah 9:6

Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty. —Psalm 104:1

Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable. —Psalm 145:2,3

GOD’S POWER IS EVERLASTING — 5

For so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. —2 Peter 1:11

"Trust in the LORD forever, for in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength." —Isaiah 26:4

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. —Psalm 90:2

But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, and the nations will not be able to abide His indignation. —Jeremiah 10:10

And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!" —Revelation 11:15b

Satan’s Power to Be Destroyed

And the devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.  —Revelation 20:10

GOD’S AWESOME POWER AT THE RED SEA — 6

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen." And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained. So the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Thus Israel saw the great work which the LORD had done in Egypt.

—Exodus 14:21,22,26-28,30, 31a

NO MIRACLE IS TOO BIG FOR GOD — 7

Fed a Million People 40 Years

"At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the LORD your God." So it was that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp. And when the layer of dew lifted, there, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. So when the children of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land.—Exodus 16:12b-15a and 35a

Water for a Million

"Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." —Exodus 17:6a

Stopped the Flooded River

Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground. —Joshua 3:17a

GOD IS SO GREAT A DELIVERER! — 8

Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Therefore, because the king’s command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.  —Daniel 3:21,22 and 27

So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, "Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you." ...Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you." —Daniel 6:16 and 21,22

THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD — 9

"Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?" —Jeremiah 23:29

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. —Hebrews 4:12

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.—Psalm 119:9

"You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you." —John 15:3

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. —Ephesians 6:17

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." —John 17:17

Holding fast the word of life. —Philippians 2:16a

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed." —John 8:31

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. —Psalm 119:11

The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. —Psalm 119:130

JESUS CHRIST IS GOD IN THE FLESH —10

For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. —Colossians 2:9

"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. —Matthew 1:23-25

But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working." Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. —John 5:17, 18

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. —Romans 1:4

Christ’s Blood Is God’s Blood

"Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood." —Acts 20:28

JESUS CHRIST IS ALMIGHTY  — 11

And from Jesus Christ ...."I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End," says the Lord, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." —Revelation 1:5a and 8

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. —Colossians 1:13-16

That you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. —1 Timothy 6:14-16

CHRIST IS SUPREME WITH THE FATHER — 12

"And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me." —John 12:45

Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. —Hebrews 1:3

And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet. —Ephesians 1:19-22a

"I and My Father are one. Though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him." —John 10:30 and 38b

"And has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man." —John 5:27

THE ALMIGHTY POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT — 13

He Is Almighty, Is in the Godhead

For there are three who bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. —1 John 5:7

But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. —Acts 5:3-5

GOD’S ABILITY — 15

He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. —Philippians 3:21b

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to abase. —Daniel 4:37

"If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king." Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here." . . . And they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them. —Daniel 3:17 and 26a, 27b

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. —Ephesians 3:20,21

"And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified." —Acts 20:32

I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.—Romans 11:1 and 23

CHRIST’S POWER TO FORGIVE SINS — 17

If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared. —Psalm 130:3,4

"If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." —2 Chronicles 7:14

"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"—He said to the paralytic, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go your way to your house." And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" —Mark 2:9-12

CHRIST, THE ONLY POWER FOR SALVATION — 37

For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands...but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.
