(Vespers) The Eleventh Hour

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit , one God. Amen.

Kyrie eleison, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord bless us. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Make us, O Lord, worthy to say with all thanksgiving:

Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, through Christ Jesus our Lord. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Let us give thanks unto the Beneficent and Merciful God, the Father of our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. For He has shielded us, rescued us, kept us, accepted us unto Him, had compassion on us, supported us, and brought us unto this hour. Let us ask Him also, to keep us this holy day and all the days of our life in all peace, the Almighty Lord our God. O Master, Lord, God Almighty, Father of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ; we thank Thee upon every condition, for any condition, and in whatever condition. For Thou hast shielded us, rescued us, kept us, accepted us unto Thee, had compassion on us, supported us and brought us unto this hour. Therefore we ask and entreat Thy goodness, O Lover-of-man, grant us to complete this holy day, and all the days of our life in all peace with Thy fear. All envy, all temptation, all the influence of Satan, the intrigue of wicked people, the rising up of enemies, hidden and manifest, take away from us, and from all Thy people, and from this, Thy holy place. But as for those things which are good and useful provide us with them. For Thou art the One who gave us the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and every power of the enemy. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, through the grace, compassion and love of man, of Thine only begotten Son, our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Through whom glory, honor, dominion, and worship befit Thee with Him and the Holy Spirit, the lifegiver who is of one essence with Thee, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

PSALM 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of Thy compassion blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know mine iniquity, and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned and done this evil before Thee, that Thou mightiest be justified in Thy words, and prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me. For behold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom hast Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean; Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that be humbled, they shall rejoice. Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and with Thy governing Spirit establish me. I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn back unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I had given it; with whole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not be pleased. A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that is broken and humbled God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings. Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar. Alleluia.

The prayer of the Eleventh Hour of the blessed day, I offer to Christ my King and my God, beseeching Him to forgive my sins.

Psalm 116

O praise the Lord, all ye nations; praise Him, all ye peoples. For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides forever. Alleluia.

Psalm 117

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel now say that He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Let the house of Aaron now say that He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Let all that fear the Lord now say that He is good, for His mercy endures forever.Out of my affliction I called upon the Lord, and He heard me and brought me into a broad place. The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do to me. The Lord is my helper, and I shall look down upon my enemies. It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to hope in the Lord than to hope in princes. All the nations compassed me round about, and by the name of the Lord I warded them off. Surrounding me they compassed me, and by the name of the Lord I warded them off. They compassed me about like bees around a honeycomb, and they burst into flame like a fire among the thorns, and by the name of the Lord I warded them off. I was pushed and overturned that I might fall, and the Lord was quick to help me. The Lord is my strength and my song, and He is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tents of the righteous. The right hand of the Lord has wrought strength, the right hand of the Lord has exalted me, the right hand of the Lord wrought strength. I shall not die, but live, and I shall tell of the works of the Lord. With chastisement has the Lord chastened me, but he has not given me over unto death. Open unto me the gates of righteousness; I will enter therein and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord, the righteous shall enter in threat. I will give thanks to Thee, for Thou hast heard me and hast become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected, the same has become the head of the corner. This in the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad therein. O Lord, save now; O Lord, send now prosperity. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord. We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. God is the Lord, and has appeared unto us. Ordain a feast with thick boughs, even unto the horns of the altar. Thou art my God, and I will confess Thee; Thou art my God, and I will exalt Thee. I will give thanks to Thee, for Thou hast heard me, and Thou art become my salvation. O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Alleluia.

Psalm 119

Unto the Lord in my affliction have I cried, and He heard me. O Lord, deliver my soul from unrighteous lips and from a crafty tongue. What shall be given unto Thee and what shall be added unto Thee for thy crafty tongue? The arrows of the mighty one, sharpened with coals of the desert. Woe is me, for my sojourning is prolonged; I have tented with the tenting of kedar, my soul has long been a sojourner. With them that hate peace I was peaceable; when I spoke to them, they warred against me without a cause. Alleluia.

Psalm 120

I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from whence comes my help. My help comes from the Lord, Who hast made heaven and the earth. Give not thy foot unto moving, and may He not slumber that keeps you. Behold, He shall not slumber nor shall He sleep, He that keeps Israel. The Lord shall keep you, the Lord is your shelter at your right hand. The sun shall not burn you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall keep you from all evil, the Lord shall guard your soul. The Lord shall keep your coming in and your going out, from now and forever more. Alleluia.

Psalm 121

I was glad because of them that said to me: Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet have stood in thy courts, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city which its dwellers share in concord. For there the tribes went up, the tribes of the Lord, as a testimony for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. For there are set thrones unto judgment, thrones over the house of David. Ask now for the things which are for the peace of Jerusalem, and for the prosperity of them that love thee. Let peace be now in thy strength, and prosperity in your palaces. For the sake of my brothers and neighbours, I spoke peace concerning you. Because of the house of the Lord our God, I have sought good things for you. Alleluia.

Psalm 122

To Thee have I lifted up my eyes, to Thee that dwells in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the handmaid looks to the hands of her mistress, so do our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He takes pity on us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us. For greatly are we filled with humility. Greatly has our soul been filled; let reproach come to them that prosper, and humility on the proud. Alleluia.

Psalm 123

Had it not been that the Lord was with us, let Israel now say, had it not been that the Lord was with us. When men rose up against us, then had they swallowed us up alive. When their wrath raged against us, then had the water overwhelmed us. Our soul has passed through a torrent; ; then had our soul passed through the water that is irresistible. Blessed be the Lord Who has not given us to be a prey to their teeth. Our soul like a sparrow was delivered out of the snare of the hunters . The snare is broken, and we are delivered. Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who has made heaven and the earth. Alleluia.

Psalm 124

They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Sion; he that dwells at Jerusalem, nevermore shall he be shaken. Mountains are round about her, and the Lord is round about His people from now and forever more. For the Lord will not permit the rod of sinners to be upon the lot of the righteous, for fear that the righteous stretch forth their hands to iniquities. Do good, O Lord to them that are good and to the upright of heart. But them that turn aside to crooked ways shall the Lord lead away with the workers of iniquity; peace be upon Israel. Alleluia.

Psalm 125

When the Lord turned again the captivity of Sion, we became as men that are comforted. Then was our mouth filled with joy, and our tongue with rejoicing. Then shall they say among the nations: The Lord has done great things unto them. The Lord has done great things among us, and we have become glad. Turn again, O Lord, our captivity, like streams in the south. They that sow with tears shall reap with rejoicing. In their going they went, and they wept as they cast their seeds. But in their coming shall they come with rejoicing, bearing their sheaves. Alleluia

Psalm 126

Except the Lord build the house, in vain do they labour that build it. Except the Lord guard the city, in vain does he watch that guards her; it is vain for you to rise at dawn. You that eat the bread of sorrow, rouse yourselves after resting, when He has given sleep to His beloved. Lo, sons are the heritage of the Lord, the reward of the fruit of the womb. Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the sons of them that were outcasts. Blessed is he that shall fulfill his desires with them; they shall not be put to shame when they speak to their enemies in the gates. Alleluia.

Psalm 127

Blessed are all they that fear the Lord, that walk in His ways. You shall eat the fruit of your labours; blessed are you, and well shall it be with you. Your wife shall be as a fruitful vine on the sides of your house. Your sons like young olive trees around your table. Behold, so shall the man be blessed that fears the Lord. The Lord bless you out of Sion, and may you see the good things of Jerusalem all the days of your life. And may you see your children's children; peace be upon Israel. Alleluia.

Psalm 128

Many a time have they warred against me from my youth, let Israel now say. Many a time have they warred against me from my youth, and yet they have not prevailed against me. The sinners wrought upon my back, they lengthened out their iniquity. The Lord is righteous; He has cut asunder the necks of sinners. Let them be put to shame and turned back, all they that hate Sion. Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which before it is plucked up is withered away. Wherefore the reaper fills not his hand, nor he that gathers sheaves his bosom. Nor have they that passed by said: The blessing of the Lord come upon you; we have blessed you in the name of the Lord. Alleluia.

Glory be to God, Holy, Holy, Holy. A passage from the Gospel according to St. Luke. May his blessings be upon us all, Amen.

LK.4:38-41

And He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. And He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of God!" And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

Glory be to God Forever. Amen.

May Thy Saying be concluded in peace. We worship Thee O Christ together with Thy Good Father and the Holy Spirit, for Thou come and saved us.

If the righteous be scarcely saved, where shall I, a sinner, appear? The heaviness of the day and its heat I endured not by reason of my weak nature, but O Thou merciful God, deem me with those of the eleventh hour ; for , behold , I was conceived in iniquities and in sins did my mother bear me. Wherefore, I presume not lift my eyes to Heaven, but relying on the abundance of Thy mercy and Thy love toward mankind, crying out and saying: "O God forgive me, a sinner, and have mercy on me."

"Zoksapatri ke lyou-ke agi-you epnevmaty" (Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.)

Make haste, O my Saviour, and lay open Thy paternal bosom, for in pleasures and lusts have I spent my life, and behold the day is far spent and passed away. Wherefore, I now trust in the abundance of Thy never-ending mercy. So forsake not a trembling heart, lacking Thy mercy, for unto Thee I cry with fear: "Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before Thee, and I am not worthy to be called Thy son; so make me as one of Thy hired servants."

"Kenin ke aa-ee ke-ic-touce e-on-ace ton e-onon Amen."(Both now and ever and unto the ages of ages, Amen.)

With diligence did I endeavour in every transgression, and with eagerness did I strive to commit every sin, and of all suffering and judgment am I deserving, wherefore, blessed Virgin, prepare for me the way of repentance, for thee I beseech and through thee I intercede and to thee I appeal to help me, lest I be ashamed. And be my attendant at my soul's departure from my body. Overthrow the conspiracies of the enemies, shut fast the gates of Hades lest they devour my soul, O blameless bride of the true Bridegroom.

O Lord, hear us, have mercy on us, and forgive our sins.

Lord have mercy (Kyrie eleison) 41 times

Holy, Holy, Holy, O Lord of Sabaoth, Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory and Thy majesty. Have mercy on us O God the Father Almighty. O Holy Trinity have mercy on us. O Lord of hosts be Thou with us. For we have no other helper in our tribulations and necessities but Thee.Loose, remit, and pardon, O God, our transgressions that we have committed voluntarily and involuntarily, consciously and unconsciously, hidden and manifest. O Lord, remit for the sake of Thy Holy Name, by which we are called, according to Thy mercy, O Lord, and not according to our sins.

Amen.

Then the worshipper prays this absolution:
We thank Thee, O our Compassionate King, that Thou hast granted us to pass this day in peace, and brought us thankfully to the evening, and made us worthy to behold the light until evening. O God, accept our glorification which we have offered Thee at this time. Deliver us from the intrigues of the adversary, and annul all his snares set against us, and grant us a peaceful night free from all pain, restlessness, fatigue, or illusion, that we may pass through it in peace and chastity, and rise up to give praises and prayers at all times and everywhere, ascribing glory unto Thy holy Name, together with the Father who is incomprehensible and without beginning, and the Holy Spirit, the Life giver, Who is equal with Thee both now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The prayer of every hour
Have mercy on us O God, and have mercy on us. Thou who, at all times, and at every hour, in Heaven and on earth art worshipped and glorified. O Christ, our God, who art long-suffering, plenteous in mercy and most compassionate, who loves the righteous and has mercy on sinners, of whom I am first. Who does not wish the death of sinner, but to repent and to live. Who calls all to salvation through the promise of
good things to come. Receive, O Lord, our prayers at this hour and at every hour; prosper our way, and guide our life toward Thy commandments. Sanctify our souls, make chaste our bodies, correct our thoughts, purify our intention, heal our sickness, remit our sins, and deliver us from every affliction evil and pain. Compass us about with Thy holy angels; that guided and guarded by their array we may attain to the unity of faith and the knowledge of Thine unapproachable and infinite glory for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Make us, O Lord, worthy to say with all thanksgiving:
Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, through Christ Jesus our Lord. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Amen.
