at a relatively late date, at the beginning of the twentieth century. Although German archaeologists have done important work abroad, the following short overview will concentrate on research conducted in Germany itself and ignore the work of German archaeologists elsewhere in the world. No mention will be made of such important sites as Olympia, Tiryns, Pergamon, Troy, Bogazköy, Babylon, Kamid el Loz, or Merimde and the scholars who devoted much time to their excavation, analysis, and interpretation. Some of these men and women originally were trained in prehistoric archaeology.
