It is more, so much more than just a 3 minute declaration of grace pronounced once a week. How should we view its role in the life of our congregations? The one is that we confess our sins; the other, that we receive absolution or forgiveness from the pastor as from God himself, not doubting but firmly believing that our sins ar\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 e \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\f0 thus forgiven before God in heaven.\'94\loch\f0 This explanation of Luther\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s fifth chief part of the Small Catechism clearly defines absolution as the pronouncement of our forgiveness from God; it is the act of our heavenly Father, speaking through his messengers, \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 s\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 etting us free from sin. \par \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 Certainly to sinful creatures who crave the forgiveness of sin and the resulting peace with the heavenly Father that it offers, absolution will be con\- sidered the most important part of the doctrine of confession. It is at this poi\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 nt that we pass from the condemnation of the Law to the soothing relief of the Gospel promises. It is here that we are assured that the grime of our rags of unrighteousness is loosened and washed away by the blood of Christ. When a sinful woman sorrowfully anointed Jesus\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 \hich\f0 feet at the dinner table, he comforted her, \'93\loch\f0 \hich\f0 Your sins are forgiven\'94\loch\f0 (Lk. 7:48) \_ an absolution in rather informal surroundings. When the prophet Nathan stood alone \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 b \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\f0 efore a broken and contrite King David, he assured him, \'93\loch\f0 \hich\f0 The Lord has taken away your sin\'94\loch\f0 (2 Sm. 12:13). \par \tab \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 As these few examples indicate, absolutions were pronounced in various words and ways and in a variety of settings in Scripture. Nothing indicates th\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\f0 at it must be done in some special way or in \'93\loch\f0 \hich\f0 proper\'94\loch\f0 surroundings. The reason, absoution is simply the pronouncement of God loosing our consciences from the bonds of sin and assuring us we are forgiven for Jesus\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 \hich\f0 sake. He, who assures that he was \'93\loch\f0 reconc\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 i\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 ling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 \hich\f0 s sins against them,\'94 \loch\f0 and who sends his messengers to invitingly implore, \par \loch\af0\dbch\af31505\hich\f0 \'93\loch\f0 \hich\f0 be reconciled to God\'94\loch\f0 (2 Co. 5:18,20), desires that the comforting and healing effect of the gospel be directed to the troubled\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 and repentant heart, no matter what the circumstances. Neither words, nor form, nor rituals}{\rtlch\fcs1 \ab\af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \b\fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 }{\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 should interfere with his objective; nothing human should come in the way of the gospel pronouncement. That is the central truth of Scripture. Furthermore, throughout its pages we encounter a variety of forms and procedures by which this truth is proclaimed and assured to the sinner, particularly the repentant\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 one. As a result the desire to absolve the repentant sinner in his presence for the strengthening of his faith seems to have become central to the doctrine and practice of the early Christian church. In its search to find meaningful ways of doing this, th \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 e\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 practice of individual or private confession and absolution developed. A troubled soul, burdened by the weight of guilt for sin, would privately go to a fatherly confessor who would then privately absolve and comfort him with the gospel according to his \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 p\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 articular needs. In the passage of time this practice became more prominent until it reached the point of established custom. By the 12}{\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\super\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 th}{\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 Century private confession and absolution overshadowed all other forms of confession in the Western Church (Koehler, 1\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 982, p. 38). In and of itself there is nothing wrong with this practice. In fact, it can be a very meaningful and comforting one. Luther himself held it very dear to his heart. He writes, \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \li0\ri2880\widctlpar\wrapdefault\faauto\adjustright\rin2880\lin0\itap0 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \li720\ri2880\widctlpar\wrapdefault\faauto\adjustright\rin2880\lin720\itap0 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 I have a high regard for private confession, for here God\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s Word an\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 d absolution are spoken privately and individually to each believer for the forgiveness of his sins, and as often as he desires it, he may have recourse to it for this forgiveness, and also for comfort counsel, and guidance. In 1215 Innocent III and the Fourth Lateran Council}{\rtlch\fcs1 \ab\af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \b\fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 }{\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 is\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 sued the famous canon on penance which required the faithful to confess privately at least once a year on pain of excommunication. Recently Pastor Mark Jeske noted that \par }\pard \ltrpar\ql \li0\ri2880\widctlpar\wrapdefault\faauto\adjustright\rin2880\lin0\itap0 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\insrsid13650120 \par }\pard\plain \ltrpar\s25\ql \li720\ri2880\widctlpar\wrapdefault\faauto\adjustright\rin2880\lin720\itap0 \rtlch\fcs1 \af0\afs24\alang1025 \ltrch\fcs0 \fs24\lang1033\langfe1033\loch\af0\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\cgrid\langnp1033\langfenp1033 {\rtlch\fcs1 \af0 \ltrch\fcs0 \insrsid13650120 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 On paper, at least, nothing has changed of this decree; a Catholic adult catechism pub\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\f0 lished recently concedes only: \'93\loch\f0 When for extraordinary reasons groups of people are not able to confess their sins individually, they may in some circumstances receive communal absolution. The confessing sinner must enumerate all of his sins in order to be absolved. His condition is a dreadful one even though his pardon is a reality. \par \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 Such was the condition of the confessing\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 sinner under the Roman church\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s doctrine and practice of confession and absolution. It was dreadful. Although the reality of God\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s pardon was true, no one came to assure the individual who was imprisoned by the guilt for his sin of it. And in fact they c \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 o\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\f0 uld not for the Roman doctrine and practice was totally at variance with the central doctrine of the Christian religion, the doctrine of justification by faith without the deeds of the law. They also came to realize that forgiveness is a free gift of God, graciously offered to all in the Gospel, received by faith, and, most importantly, it is not in any way conditional, relying on the \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 works of men. They say that it is gross arrogance on our part to stand before a group of people and tell them their sins are forgiven. After all there may be some out ther \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 e who are not members of the elect, or there may be some who are impenitent or are hypocrites, there may be impenitent adulterers, or liars, or robbers, or even downright atheists. You cannot tell them they are forgiven, can you? Yes, we can and we must f \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 o\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 r God himself has commanded us to preach it. To him it makes no difference who they are and what they have done. Jesus died and took away their sin, reconciling them to God. If he knows that they are murderers and thieves he will first speak to them of f sin and of God \hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s wrath and the eternal damnation of hell in order to bring them to a realization of their sin. God\hich\f0 \rquote \loch\f0 s standpoint it makes no difference who they are and wh\hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 a \hich\af0\dbch\af31505\loch\f0 t they are. Jesus died for them and took their sins away. And we will tell them this whether they are believers or unbelievers, again because we know it is true.
